It is an announcement, yes, but it is also a choice.<\/p> \n<p>We can assume that Mary must have made choices every day that brought gladness to God\u2019s heart.  \u201cFavoured one\u201d, the angel calls her, and so we know that she must have been an amazing person, whose life of faithfulness was beyond exemplary.  While God could have been confident in how Mary would choose \u2013 God knew her character, and knew her heart \u2013 God still offers her a choice.   She could have said \u201cNo\u201d.<\/p>  \n<p>Mary\u2019s initial response to the angel\u2019s appearance is alarm \u2013 she is \u201cgreatly troubled\u201d &#8211; but she is assured that she should \u201cBe not afraid\u201d.  She then questions, perhaps doubts, what she knows is a scientific physiological impossibility.  \u201cHow can this be?\u201d she asks, but is assured, \u201cWith God, nothing is impossible.\u201d   Then, she gives her considered, informed consent.  \u201cLet it be to me according to your word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Latin words for her response to the angel is \u201cfiat mihi secundum verbum tuum\u201d.  What we call \u201cMary\u2019s fiat\u201d has been said to be the moment on which all of salvation history hung.  She could have refused what she knew would be personally challenging, perhaps even socially devastating, a history-changing responsibility, daunting beyond comprehension.
